Mohammad Nabi quits as Afghanistan skipper: Mohammad Nabi has decided to end his tenure as the skipper of Afghanistan cricket team. He made it official with a tweet on his twitter handle it read, ‘My resignation as a captain of Afghanistan’s national cricket team’. Nabi who recently led the national team in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 where Afghanistan registered their first ever win in a World Cup match over Scotland said he is proud of what he did with and for the team in last couple of years.
Nabi decided to quit captaincy citing the team’s performance and his own form as the reason for his resignation; he was nowhere close to his best in the world cup and the team suffered due to the lack of form of their skipper’s. He now wants to focus on his batting and is ready to help the new skipper appointed by the ACB.
His official statement put up on twitter read, “I have served Afghanistan’s national cricket team as a captain for more than two years, I tried my very best to bring victories to our team and nation. I am proud that the national team played the 2015 World Cup under my captaincy.
“Given the recent performance of the team, and particularly my out of form status (sic), I would like to request you to accept my resignation as a captain and allow me to continue to play as a team player.
“I will sincerely provide and share my captaincy experience with the new captain. At the end, I would like to thank ACB, my colleagues and fans inside and outside Afghanistan who supported me all the time.”
It is under him that Afghanistan stood second in the World Cricket League Championship played in October 2013, which sealed them a place in their first World Cup, 2015. Nabi also captained Afghanistan in their first appearance in the Asia Cup, 2014 where they beat Bangladesh by 32 runs to record their first ever win against a Test-playing team in international cricket.
