Emotions are running high in India after a deadly terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama district killed over 40 jawans on February 14. Common man to celebrities and cricketers have condemned the act that has seen India’s relation with Pakistan plummeting. Some former and current cricketers have come forward to take responsibilities for the aggrieved families and their children.
India pacer Mohammed Shami has strengthened his determination ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia as he wants to dedicate victory in the series to the martyred jawans. Shami though has not limited his contribution to the 22 yards only.
The bowler has already donated Rs 5 lakh to the CRPF Wives Welfare Association saying cricketers are always there for the soldiers who guard the border while they represent the country on the playing ground.
“It’s very upsetting to hear about the tragic events that happened in Pulwama. They risk their lives at the borders so we Indians can sleep safe. It’s the least we can do by contributing to help the families who have lost their loved ones and we will always be by their side,” Shami, who recently won the Man of the Series in the ODI series against New Zealand, told India TV.
“It’s our responsibility to give back for the amount they have done for us. We Indians are safe because they’re risking their lives 24×7,” he further said.
Shami has done consistently well for India
Mohammed Shami, who has been playing continuously for some time now and has been consistent, will play Australia in the five-match ODI series starting in Hyderabad on March 2. His impressive run with the ball is likely to have secured him a berth in the squad for the ICC World Cup in England this year.
“As cricketers, we try our level best to go and meet the jawans who are out there. Their morale is boosted thinking that there are people who care about them. Please don’t ever feel alone because there are millions who are at your side at the moment. From the bottom of our hearts we salute you,” the Bengal fast bowler said.
India will play a two-match T20I series starting February 24 before the ODI series kicks off. This is the Men in Blue’s final international assignment before they begin their WC campaign against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.
