Bangladesh batsman Mominul Haque got the most out of Bangladesh A team’s tour of Ireland. The southpaw made the most of the opportunity in the 50-over format. Often being dubbed as a Test specialist, he crafted a career-best 182 against Ireland A, and in the process, earned a national recall in the ODI team, for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Mominul didn’t find a mention when Bangladesh’s squad for the Asia Cup was announced on Thursday, but he was recalled when Nazmul Hossain Shanto suffered hand injury during a practice session. Mominul last played for Bangladesh in the ODIs in the 2015 World Cup.

“I think the Ireland series was a great learning curve for me and it will help me in my coming days,” Mominul told Cricbuzz. “I had to learn how to play aggressive cricket in completely different conditions and it was entirely a new experience for me. It was satisfying in a sense that I had managed to play a lot of shots throughout the series. I had very limited shots at my disposal and probably that is the reason it had an impact on my career in the shorter formats,” he added.

A dull ODI career so far

Bangladesh team management is yet to find a suitable No. 3 batsman for the limited-overs team and Mominul might be their best buy for the spot. He made his ODI debut in the 2015 World Cup but ended up featuring in just the first two games and didn’t make a lasting impression. Consequently, he was dropped and hasn’t featured in white-ball cricket since. Bangladesh will start their Asia Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 15.

Bangladesh squad for Asia Cup 2018:

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (C), Shakib Al Hasan (vice-captain}, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Mithun, Litton Kumar Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Ariful Haque, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nazmul Islam Apu, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Hider Rony, Mominul Haque.
