The role of the wicketkeeper in any format of the game plays a vital part. Especially in a global T20 tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), a single mistake by a wicketkeeper can dampen the chances of a team in crucial stages of a game. On the other hand, a brilliant vigilant guard by a wicketkeeper can help the team dominate the opposition.

Hence, the role not only involves being cautious and sharp behind the stumps but it also involves displaying some exceptional reflex action to convert a minimal chance into a dismissal out of nowhere.

In the same vein, let's have a look at five wicketkeepers who have effected most dismissals in the IPL:

5. Parthiv Patel

The veteran Indian keeper announced his retirement from all forms of the game last year. He was part of the RCB squad in IPL 2020 but did not get a single game in the season. He has featured for 6 different teams in the league's history. Parthiv has a total of 81 dismissals to his name behind the wicket, among which 65 are catches and the rest are stumpings.

4. Robin Uthappa

Though Robin Uthappa has not regularly kept wickets for his IPL teams, he possesses impressive numbers with the gloves. He has effected 90 dismissals in the league history so far, out of which 58 are catches and 32 are stumpings. He is third among keepers in terms of most stumpings in the league. Given he is part of CSK in IPL 2022, he won’t have to perform the wicketkeeping duties with MS Dhoni already present as the primary keeper in the playing XI. He has announced his retirement after featuring in the 2022 edition of the IPL.

3. Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha is considered among the best keepers behind the wicket in international cricket right now. He has shown his skills with the gloves in IPL as well. He has effected a total of 106 dismissals in the cash-rich league including 82 catches and 24 stumpings. He performed brilliantly with the bat for SRH at the top of the order in the 2020 season.

2. Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is among the most experienced players in the cash-rich league. He has played a total of 242 games in the IPL as a wicketkeeper, in which he has effected 169 dismissals including 133 catches and 36 stumpings. He holds the record for taking the second-most catches behind the wicket in tournament history. Karthik stepped down from captaincy duties of KKR mid-season last year and has returned to his former franchise RCB for IPL 2022.

1. MS Dhoni

The former Indian captain MS Dhoni has proved his mettle as a wicketkeeper in his long career. He has recorded the most number of dismissals (180) in IPL so far. Among these, 138 are catches and the rest 42 are stumpings. Dhoni has played as a specialist wicketkeeper in all the seasons of IPL from the very start in 2008. He played a pivotal role in CSK’s success over the years both as a captain and a keeper. With the defending champions all set to start their campaign in the upcoming IPL 2024, fans will be itching to know how the legend will fare in the new season and whether it will be his last dance in the mega cricket carnival.
