Udit Raj, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party has sent out a subtle suggestion to the BCCI requesting them to create a reservation system for Dalits in the Indian cricket team. Raj also used the example of Cricket South Africa which allows a minimum six colored players in the playing XI. Of course, in recent times, the rule has been amended to an extent and has also seen the likes of Russell Domingo, a Cape Colored cricketer as the coach.

Udit Raj also went on to state that reservations must be extended to Dalits as well in each sport. He also added that the United States also has a similar policy for the same believing that gold medals would come as a result of offering reservations to Dalits in different sports as well.

“Reservation should be extended to Dalits in each of the sports. In South Africa, the quota is offered in their cricket team. The US too pitches for blacks, who slog, work hard in athletics. There are not many whites in athletics.

“…if reservation is offered here in sports, we too will win gold medals,” Udit Raj had said a few days ago.

“You go to the US, there is a partnership with non-whites in each sector. In South Africa, reservation is given to Negroes even in a sport like a cricket. There can’t be more than five whites in a cricket team,” he added.

Reports from various reliable sources go on to state that Udit Raj will be writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as President Pranab Mukherjee for the introduction of Dalit quota in cricket as well as other national sports.

This sort of system has also been opposed in several parts of the globe under the pretext of destroying cricket teams. The rule had been applied for the Zimbabwe cricket team, something that saw an exodus of great players make their way out of the team.
