Of late, the only time Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lost his cool is when he has been asked about his retirement. Be it the Asia Cup T20 or the World T20 2016 reporters popped up the question on multiple occasions when the team or he hadn’t performed par to the expectations. Dhoni initially dodged the question but when it started to become a regular feature he decided to take it head on and most would remember how he asked the Cricket Australia reporter to join him there and asked him if he thought he wasn’t fit enough or good enough to play any longer. Since then no other journo has been willing to invite troubles and ask Dhoni about it but it reappeared during the interaction with fans on the launch of the trailer of his biopic MS Dhoni – The Untold Story.

Fox Star the producers had organized a few contests and awarded the winners a chance to attend the event and interact with Dhoni. So a fan asked him ‘did he wish to play for India right from the time when he started to play cricket? And at what point does he see himself retiring from the game?’

Dhoni understood what he actually wanted to ask and told him to do away with the fillers. “Sorry, sorry, sorry. Please repeat the second part of the question. Sidha sawaal pucho na, agey ka line hatao (Remove the first line of the question and ask whatever you want to ask directly)”

He then reframed the question and asked if he has achieved whatever he aspired for as a cricketer. Dhoni said at the time he started he hadn’t even thought about playing for India it was only when he did well for the India A team that he thought he might be picked to represent the country.

“When I started playing, I never thought that I will play for India. When I did well for India A in that Zimbabwe tour, I realised that now I have a chance to play for the country and that opportunity may come either today or after sixth months.” Dhoni explained

“So I didn’t play the game thinking that I have to achieve a particular goal or didn’t have any personal milestone in mind. In our childhood when we used to play for school or in the park, our only motive was to win the game, so that is the only purpose. If you start deciding your future by the milestones you have achieved, then the whole scenario becomes very difficult,”

To further emphasize his point, Dhoni gave a recent example that of American swimmer Michael Phelps who recently won his 22nd Olympic gold medal, the most in the history of the games. He had won six gold medals in his first appearance at the 2004 Athens Olympics which is a remarkable feat in itself but Phelps didn’t stop there and broke his own record at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, London Olympics in 2012 and has thus far stood at the top of the podium 4 times in Rio.

“In that sense, Michael Phelps has so many Olympic golds, he could have easily retired after getting five, right?”

Dhoni definitely made it clear that trophies and tournament victories is not what he has been aiming to achieve in his cricketing career and that it will be only over when he feels he has given it all to the game.

“So it’s not about milestones. it’s about how much you can contribute, how good you are at the moment and then take it forward,”
