If one Bollywood star has to be called the biggest cricket fan it has to be the superstar of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan. He never misses an India game and is an ardent follower of the Indian Premier League as well. His understanding of the game and love for Indian cricketers is widely known since he has a special post on Twitter after each game.
He was on the pre-match Extraa Innings show to promote his movie Sarkar 3 and had a great time sharing his experiences. Later in his personal blog, Amitabh wrote that former Indian captain MS Dhoni paid him a visit on the sets of the movie Baghban back in 2003 and the entire unit present for the shoot including the megastar himself were in awe of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“The memory goes on for years and years. Right down to present times and Sachin and M.S. Dhoni and all the younger players that exhibit such tremendous energy and skills on the pitch. Dhoni walking onto the set of ‘Baghban’ while I was shooting and all of us in absolute awe of the man,” the 74-year-old wrote.
Amitabh’s moment of embarrassment with Vinoo Mankand
Amitabh had a moment of embarrassment during a charity match between the Indian team and the Bollywood. When he was out bowling the umpire who was officiating the proceedings gave him bowling tips which bewildered him.
“Those friendly charity cricket matches that the film industry played with the Indian team. That moment when I was bowling and the umpire guiding me by telling me to bowl over the wicket and shorter,” he said.
On enquiring with a teammate about who the umpire was he realised that it was Indian spinner Vinoo Mankand and Amitabh didn’t know how to react to the situation.
“And I was looking at him with some dismay, as to why he was guiding me and me not liking being told like so. And on disclosing my displeasure to another team member, he telling me off with: ‘You absolute idiot. That umpire is the great Vinoo Mankad. And me not knowing where to hide my face from this spin bowling giant, Mr Mankad,” he added.
