India played competitive cricket in their recently concluded Test series against England. However, they couldn’t latch on to the opportunities provided to them by the Three Lions and hence, slumped to a 1-4 defeat. Apart from the encounter at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground where India lost by an innings and 159 runs, Virat Kohli and Co had the chance of getting under England’s skins on every other match.

Their bowlers turned out to be exceptional as the likes of Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami made frequent inroads into the Brits’ batting lineup. Unfortunately, the batters couldn’t back them enough. Following the drubbing, MS Dhoni, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman mentioned that lack of practice matches didn’t allow the batsmen to gauge the conditions.

Dhoni points out the loophole

“Indian team missed out on playing practices matches before the series, which is why the batsmen are finding it difficult to adjust. This is a part of the game. We shouldn’t forget that India is currently No. 1 in the rankings,” Dhoni mentioned during a motivational event conducted by the Central Industrial Security Force at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi.

Prior to the first Test, India played one warm-up match against Essex at County Ground in Chelmsford. In that contest, the travails of the Indian batsmen were palpable and they couldn’t recollect themselves thereafter. Even former cricketer and current commentator Sunil Gavaskar put forth lack of practice as the reason behind the Indian batters not being able to adjust to the conditions.

In the meantime, the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is scheduled to get underway on September 15 and India are scheduled to play their first match against Hong Kong on September 18. Dhoni will also be back after he last played for India in the ODI and T20I series against England.
