MS Dhoni, the veteran Indian cricketer, turned 39 years old on Tuesday, July 7. It has almost been a year since he last stepped on the cricket field and it was during the 2019 edition of the World Cup. In the semi-final against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester, he churned out a fifty, but couldn’t take India over the finishing line. Martin Guptill ran him out with a direct hit to end his stay.
He was then set to play for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He attended the practice sessions as well, but the coronavirus pandemic ended up playing spoilsport. The tournament was set to get underway on March 29 with the match between CSK and Mumbai Indians (MI). However, the league had to be postponed due to the COVID-19.
It was also being heard that he would be playing in the T20 World Cup in Australia. But all that has been put to hold owing to the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, on his birthday, the cricketing fraternity wished him whole-heartedly. The veteran might not have played any cricket for the last 12 months, but it hasn’t affected his fandom by any stretch of the imagination.
Fans delighted to see MS Dhoni
The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, who both flourished playing under Dhoni, lauded him on the auspicious occasion. Even his wife Sakshi shared a few pictures, writing that she wanted to celebrate the birthday, cutting cakes and blowing candles. In the meantime, fans got some glimpse of him at his residence.
The fans waited for him as the gates of the farmhouse were closed. The supporters somehow managed to capture Dhoni, riding a bike inside his compound. Dhoni didn’t disappoint his well-wishers and even waved at them.
