MS Dhoni supporters counter attack his critics after the Australia ODIs

Dhoni was questioned leading into the series and when he emerged as the Man of the Series his fans had quite a lot to give back to the haters.

For Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni, life couldn’t have been sweeter overnight. The cricketer in the twilight of a glorious career had a prolonged dry spell with the bat and eventually hit form in the just-concluded ODI series against Australia. However, even his first of the three fifties that he scored in the series seemed to be unconvincing as he consumed 96 balls for scoring 51 and his critics felt it did India more harm than good by putting the other batsmen under pressurein a stiff run chase.

However, the scenario changed in less than a week after the dashing batsman came up with two more fifties – in Adelaide (55 not out off 54) and Melbourne (87 not out off 114). While in the first, India squaring the series after the 34-run loss at the SCG, the second took them home and bag the series 2-1. Dhoni didn’t give the judges an opportunity to pick another player as the Man of the Series even though there were performances from India that helped them outsmart the hosts in the series.

It was then the chance for MSD’s admirers to hit back at his critics who showed little mercy to him while rapping his slowing down batting form. The counter-attack was in all forms – direct backlash to indirect jibes – but the supporters ensured that they did not let go the opportunity to defend their hero.

The debate over Dhoni or Rishabh Pant in the limited-overs teams is likely to intensify in the days to come but as long as it is healthy, one doesn’t mind for it is India who will benefit the most if either of them delivers. Dhoni was dropped for the T20Is against Windies at home and Australia Down Under after the ODIs against the Caribbeans but was picked later for the T20Is in New Zealand which will be played next month.
