MSK Prasad gets extension as Chief Selector till next BCCI AGM

MSK Prasad and his team are all set to retain their respective positions in the national setup until the next BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year. The recent reports in NDTV suggest that the selectors have received a temporary extension. One of the senior members of the BCCI, on conditions of anonymity, confirmed the same. He also added that there is no certainty over the dates of the AGM of the board either.

Under normal circumstances, the contracts of the selectors are renewed annually. The contract date commences on September 1 every year and ends on August 31 in the following year. However, there is a big confusion in the system with regard to the AGM due to the involvement of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and their amendments. Interestingly, the selectors can be changed only at the AGM, as per the rules.

“Yes, senior national selection committee has been handed over a temporary extension. Now the tenure of that cannot be ascertained as no one knows when the AGM will be held,” a senior BCCI official told PTI recently.

“Till Supreme Court passes the final order and the Lodha Constitution is formally adopted at the AGM, no decision can be taken. Since September, the selectors were out of contract. As per norms, selection committee can only be changed at the AGM. So we have to continue with this current lot as of now even if it means the extension is for a few months,” the official conceded.

Controversial decisions

Talking about MSK Prasad, his tenure has been marked by controversies. He was in the firing range for having quoted MS Dhoni as no more a direct candidate in the national side. Later, his decision to rest the likes of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja came under the scanner too. During the so called ‘rest’ period, Ashwin was seen playing County cricket and Ranji Trophy. In addition to that, his claims of his talks with Ashish Nehra were rubbished by the latter. MSK Prasad certainly has been under the scrutiny in the recent times.
