Indian cricketer Munaf Patel has been involved in a cheque bounce case recently. The director of a Delhi-based real estate firm was sent to a two-day custody in the cheque bounce incident on Tuesday. Metropolitan Magistrate Manisha Tripathy allowed custodial interrogation of Rahul Chamola, director of the accused company Nivas Promoters Pvt Ltd, on a complaint alleging that the accused persons have cheated a Delhi residential of certain crores of money which were used in cricket betting and match-fixing.
On July 27, a Delhi court summoned the world cup winning cricketer, one of the directors of the company, as an accused in the case. The victim Sunil Kumar Aggarwal, who hails from Delhi, claimed that he had paid money for flats in the accused company’s Greater Noida housing project-Oneleaf Troy.
Crores of rupees involved
The deal between the two sides didn’t proceed and the money which was returned got dishonored. The complaint was filed under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act against the company and six others. “I have come to know that the accused persons have misused the funds in cricket betting and are involved in match fixing and misappropriated the funds by diverting them to Sri Lanka,” the complainant said in his complaint based on which an FIR was registered. It has also been said that legal notice was sent to the accused persons but they failed to make the payment.
Prima facie case
“There is sufficient material on record to summon all the accused persons. Therefore, a prima facie case punishable under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act is made out against them. This court, therefore, takes cognizance of offence,” the court said while summoning the cricketer and others in the case.
Munaf was named in the Gujarat Lions’ squad in this year’s IPL. He was an integral member of the Indian World Cup winning squad in 2011.
