Michael Hussey is one of Australia’s greatest middle-order batsmen to have played the game. He forayed into ODI cricket when he was almost 30 years old in 2004 against India in Perth, the place he grew up playing the sport. However, he had to wait for another year to get his second opportunity against New Zealand in Christchurch. Hussey made his Test debut in the same year against Windies.
The left-handed batsman immediately made an impact with a couple of centuries in the series. He didn’t look back ever since and carved a reputation for being one of the most dependable batsmen Australia ever produced. Hussey played his last international match in Australia’s home Test series versus Sri Lanka in Sydney back in January 2013.
Hussey’s illustrious career
The Western Australia-born cricketer played 79 Tests and 185 ODIs during which he racked up 6235 and 5442 runs respectively. Apart from the two traditional formats, he was equally efficient in T20s despite not possessing the stature of a hard-hitter. His knock of 60 runs from 24 balls against Pakistan in the semi-final of the 2009 World T20 created an indelible impact in the psyche of fans.
He also plied his trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mr Cricket represented Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Having retired as a professional cricket, he is presently the batting coach of MS Dhoni-led CSK and is celebrating his 43rd birthday today, as the team gears up for the final contest against SRH.
Murali Vijay, who has only played one match in this season’s IPL took to Twitter and shared a heart-warming birthday message for the veteran. He wrote- “Being kind, staying humble, working hard and ever smiling, pretty much everything is Mr. Cricket! Wishing you a very Happy Birthday @mhussey393 master. Have a great day and years ahead”
