As the retirement news of AB De Villiers spread, lots of wishes and congratulatory messages poured in. Social media especially Twitter and Instagram were filled with messages of gratitude for the South African great. He will surely go down as one of the greatest batsmen of this generation.

The 34-year-old made a video announcement on all his social media platforms. He cited being tired and running out of gas as reasons for his decision. He thanked all his fans and well-wishers for the support he received throughout his international career. Further, ABD urged the fans to continue supporting skipper Faf Du Plessis and the Proteas side.

With over 20,000 runs in his international career, AB De Villiers was regarded as the backbone of the South African batting lineup for more than a decade. He created a sense of fear in the bowler’s mind due to his wide range of cricketing shots. Throughout his career, he could be seen toying with the best bowlers you will ever see.

With his retirement, he also became the first cricketer to end with an average of 50 plus as well as a strike rate of over 100 in One Day Internationals. While his numbers in the limited overs format are extraordinary, he was no less in the longer format as well. The recent series against India and Australia were a sublime example of the same. He scored 8765 runs in Tests at a fantastic batting average of 50.66.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper captain Mushfiqur Rahim expressed his sadness over the legend’s retirement. Lauding ABD, he posted a caption alongside a picture of both in action during an international cricket game. He further asserted that the cricketing universe was going to miss him dearly.

Here’s what Mushfiqur Rahim posted on Twitter

“ABD …!!!! What a player ..!!! A true legend…gonna miss u mate”
