Former Indian skipper Ajit Wadekar’s wife Rekha Wadekar feels that MS Dhoni’s leadership style is similar to that of Ajit, who led the Indian team to their first-ever Test series victory on English soil way back in 1971.

Rekha, a keen follower of cricket herself, feels that Dhoni, much like Ajit, always took decisions with a cool and composed mind, while she also had a small piece of advice for India’s incumbent skipper Virat Kohli.

“More than Virat Kohli, my favourite captain is Dhoni. More or less he is like Ajit. Dhoni always took decisions with a cool mind just like Ajit,” Rekha told mid-day.com on Monday, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of India’s first series in England.

Wadekar, who represented the country in 37 Tests and scored 2,113 runs and also served as the national chief selector, captained the team to a famous win at the Oval in London, where India recorded a four-wicket victory to clinch a historic 1-0 away win.

Dhoni, 40, bid adieu to all formats of the game in August 2020 and is only active in the Indian Premier League, where he is currently leading Chennai Super Kings. In a career spanning across 16 years, Dhoni scored 17,266 international runs in 350 ODIs, 98 T20Is and 90 Tests, while he is the only captain to have won all three ICC tournaments that existed in his time – T20 World Cup (2007), ODI World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013).

She further highlighted another common element between Dhoni and Wadekar. “Ajit never gave importance to unnecessary things and Dhoni worked on the same lines as well.”

If Virat curtails his aggression, it will help him perform more consistently: Rekha Wadekar

Speaking about the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli, Rekha, who has been watching the proceedings of England and India’s ongoing five-match series, stated that he needs to be careful with his aggression and curbing those instincts would certainly help him perform even better and more consistently.

“More aggression may affect his game. I think he should be careful. If Virat curtails his aggression, it will definitely help him perform more consistently,” Rekha remarked.
