The Indian team produced a stunning show at Melbourne Cricket Ground as they registered a comprehensive victory against Australia by 8 wickets to level the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy by 1-1. This is a crucial win for India as they managed to thump the opposition at one of their favourite dens after facing a humiliating defeat in Adelaide.

Despite being marred with injuries and losing their key pacers, India’s bowling line-up showed class and character and was at their usual best at MCG while the stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane was the wrecker-in-chief as he led from the front by slamming a spectacular ton in the first innings. The game had commenced with Tim Paine winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Batting first, the hosts were bundled out for a paltry total of 195 as Marnus Labuschagne was the highest run-getter with 48 runs to his name. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowler for India in the first innings as he scalped 4 wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin had three to his name while Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja picked two and one wicket respectively.

In reply, India managed to post a massive total of 326 on the board as Ajinkya Rahane went all guns blazing against the opponents’ bowling attack. Rahane played a remarkable knock of 112 runs while Ravindra Jadeja contributed with both bat and ball as he added 57 runs to the scoreboard.

Batting in the second innings, the hosts racked up a target of 200 on the board to take the lead of 70 runs. Cameron Green played a knock of 45 runs while Wade contributed 40 runs. Mohammed Siraj ended up with three strikes in the third innings while Ashwin, Bumrah and Jadeja picked two wickets each.

Rohit Sharma makes a hilarious comment on Ashwin’s post

Chasing 70 runs in their second innings was a cakewalk for the Men in Blue as they completed the target within 16 overs to register a comprehensive victory in the Boxing Day Test.

After the win, the spinner Ravi Ashwin took to his official Instagram handle to congratulate his teammates for the top effort and levelling the Border Gavaskar Trophy by 1-1. The veteran posted a picture featuring him, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav, Ajinkya Rahane, and Jasprit Bumrah leaning on the wall.

“When your backs are up against the wall, lean back and enjoy the support of the wall! Well done to the entire team and what a win that was,” Ashwin wrote.

Seeing the post, India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was quick to point out that Pujara looks too stiff while standing. To this, Ashwin hilariously replied that the national anthem was playing in the mind of India’s number 3.

Rohit commented, “Pujara too stiff.” To this, Ashwin replied, “National Anthem was playing in his head”.
