The wise men of Indian cricket have demanded a pay hike from the BCCI. Their current pay structure – Rs 60 lacs per season for senior selection committee members and Rs 40 lacs for the junior selection committee members – haven’t been revised since 2012. Currently, MSK Prasad heads the five-man selection panel.
Ganguly raises issue of low pay to domestic players
Earlier, former India captain Sourav Ganguly had asked the BCCI to upgrade the salaries of the domestic cricketer to provide more financial safety to the cricketers. Ganguly, who is a member of the BCCI technical committee, raised the issue in a meeting held in Kolkata recently. Prior to this, Harbhajan Singh also spoke on the issue and wrote a letter to then head coach Anil Kumble citing the challenges faced by the players with limited financial security in domestic cricket.
The BCCI has already received proposals for the revised pay structure of the senior and junior selectors. The richest board in the world will have to consider giving a hike of at least 30-35 per cent given that the pay structure has remained the same for five years now.
“Yes, we have received multiple proposals with regards to revision of pay for national selectors. One of the points raised by a number of people is that chairman of both selection committees should get more than other members as the job profile carries more responsibility,” a BCCI official, who wished to remain unnamed, said.
The official also stated that one of the proposals received suggested that the senior committee members must get a sum of Rs 1.2 crore, which is exactly the double of what they are getting at the moment. He, however, stated that there is a need for a rise.
“After five seasons when there hasn’t been salary revision, if there is a demand for hike, it is justified,” the official said.
Kohli-Kumble spoke of pay revision for India cricketers
The Indian team is busy playing a 3-match Test series in Sri Lanka. They received 100 % hike in their pay during the long home Test season which did not please the players too much. In association with former coach Kumble, Kohli met the BCCI in May regarding the issue and demanded what the players feel is the right amount they deserve for their work. Since then, no official word on a rise has been reported.
