Two of the biggest figures in Indian cricket at the moment, Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly have taken the cricket world by storm with their contradicting statements. While the BCCI president claimed he ‘personally’ requested Kohli to not quit T20I captaincy, the latter refuted the claims, saying no such request was made. This episode has left the fans divided and the hullabaloo isn’t likely to end anytime soon.

For the unversed, the saga started after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Rohit Sharma as ODI captain on December 8. The decision was shocking as Kohli, who stepped down as T20I skipper post the T20 World Cup last month, expressed desires of continuing leading the team in the other two formats. However, the national selectors wanted a common captain in white-ball cricket. Hence, Rohit was given the charge.

More interestingly, Ganguly then claimed that he asked Kohli to not step down as T20I skipper. As the 33-year-old didn’t agree to do so, the selectors and officials had to take this major call. “I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy,” the BCCI president was quoted as saying by News18.

“Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket. He has captained for a long period of time and these things happen,” he added. As if this statement wasn’t sensational enough, the India Test skipper refuted the claims entirely. He instead stated BCCI took his in a very progressive manner. Kohli also claimed the selectors told him about the massive decision just 90 minutes before the meeting.

Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly come up with contradicting statements

“When I approached BCCI about the T20 captaincy, it was received well by them and I was not told to not leave the T20 captaincy.  I was contacted 1.5 hours before selection committee meet. The chief selector discussed the Test team. Before ending the call the selectors told me I won’t be ODI captain and I was fine. There was no prior communication,” Kohli send in teh explosive press conference.

With Ganguly and Kohli coming up with different claims, Twitter is left divided. While Kohli has received a lot of support from his fans, Ganguly, who’s hailed as one of the finest Indian skippers ever, also got fans backing him. In fact, #NationStandsWithDada became one of the top trends on Twitter amid this saga.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how netizens led their support to Sourav Ganguly
