Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were involved in a breathtaking game on Sunday in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final. The action went down to the last ball of the match and the defending champions sealed it in the end courtesy some smart fielding and bowling. Tamil Nadu were once again at the receiving end. However, after the match, Ravi Ashwin was in the spotlight as he celebrated in the last over after hitting two fours.

Tamil Nadu needed 13 runs in the final over of the innings to be crowned as the champions with Ashwin on strike. Manish Pandey handed the ball over to Krishnappa Gowtham to do the job. But the off-spinner conceded a boundary off the very first delivery. Ashwin slog-swept the next ball as well but it didn’t go the distance.

Rather, Devdutt Padikkal who was fielding in the deep first went for the catch but for some reason decided against it and could do neither only to concede a crucial boundary. It was a huge moment in the match as the equation came down to five off four balls. Sensing a victory then, Ravi Ashwin hilariously celebrated with a fist pump.

All goes downhill for Tamil Nadu after Ravi Ashwin’s celebration

Gowtham managed to eke out a dot off the next ball and then Ravi Ashwin took a single after which Tamil Nadu needed four off two balls. The game swung massively in favour of Karnataka when Vijay Shankar got run-out off the penultimate delivery looking to steal a second run thanks to Manish Pandey’s gun throw from long-on.

Even Ashwin wasn’t on strike for the last ball and Murugan Ashwin could only pick up a leg bye. Tamil Nadu fell agonisingly short of the target by two runs and two contrasting emotions were witnessed on the field. Karnataka had managed to defend their title while Tamil Nadu ended up second once again like it happened in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final against the same team.

More than anything, Ravi Ashwin was trolled on Twitter for celebrating a little too early bringing back memories of Mushfiqur Rahim doing the same thing against India in the World T20 2016. The latter had celebrated then in front of Hardik Pandya in the last over after hitting two fours and then Bangladesh ended up losing the game. Same happened with Ashwin and the Twitterati roasted him for it.
