New Zealand to hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh in T20I Tri-Series ahead of T20 World Cup 2022

The tri-series between Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh has been confirmed and the three teams will face off against each other in early October before the start of the T20 World Cup 2022. Pakistan and Bangladesh will travel to New Zealand and play seven games, including the finals, in preparation for the big event.

PCB had accepted the invitation and agreed to play the series back in May when the hosts New Zealand proposed for the event. All the seven games will be played at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch and all three teams will play four matches in order to decide the finalists of the tri-series. After the Pakistan skipper missed the 2020–21 series due to a thumb injury, this will be Babar Azam’s first T20I assignment on New Zealand soil since the beginning of 2018.

“I am pleased that we will be featuring in the tri-series in New Zealand as it will help us to arrive early and not only acclimatize for the T20 World Cup in Australia but also give final touches to our preparations. I missed the last series in New Zealand due to a thumb injury and look forward to playing cricket in Christchurch against two good oppositions,” Babar said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan performed really well in the 2021 T20 World Cup and remained unbeaten throughout the group stage. They finished on top of their group’s points table, having won all their five matches and marched into the semi-finals in style. They lost to Australia in the semi-final, but Babar Azam finished as the top scorer of the tournament as he accumulated 303 runs in six matches.

Just like in 2021, Pakistan will face India this year again in their campaign opener on October 23, 2022. Pakistan dominated India when the teams last met, and broke their jinx of never winning against India in a World Cup event.
