New Zealand was deserving, India had to pay the price for its mistakes in T20 WC: Virender Sehwag

India’s dreams of making it to the next round of T20 World Cup 2021 crashed when Afghanistan lost to New Zealand by eight wickets. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag added that Kiwis were deserving and this is why they stormed through the semi-finals. On the other hand, India paid the price for its earlier mistakes.

India couldn’t start their campaign on a fine note and their underwhelming performance continued in the match against NZ too. Though they returned flying in the next two games, it was too late to better up their chances. Though India’s campaign is over, they will lock horns with Namibia to end their league fixture.

Sehwag stated that India was semi-finalists in the previous six ICC events and it was not the case this time. It is for the first time since 2012 that men in blue failed to qualify for ICC events’ semi-final stage.

“New Zealand was deserving (of a place in the semi-finals). India had to pay the price for its mistakes. In the previous six ICC events, India was the semi-finalist, but this time, they couldn’t reach the semi-finals. And, after New Zealand defeated Afghanistan yesterday, Indian fans were like this (Virender Sehwag shared a crying meme),” said Sehwag as quoted by Facebook Watch show Virugiri Dot Com.

India had meager chances of moving through the next round but it depended on Afghanistan and NZ clash as the former had to win the game. However, it didn’t happen and India’s campaign came to a heart-breaking end. Though India’s NRR is best in group 2, it stands to be of no use.

Various reasons have been attributed to India’s dismal run in T20 WC, ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah added that the Indian team has been on road for six months now and the bio bubble fatigue is for real. He suggested that back-to-back games might have taken a toll on players’ mental health. India stands with four points in their four played games of T20 WC so far.
