India women’s team will be up against the New Zealand women’s side in the first of five ODI match series at the John Davies Oval ground in Queenstown. This will be an important series for both sides with the World Cup coming up next month and India will benefit the most to get used to the conditions and the pitches. The one-off T20I worked in the favour of the host nation as they went on to win the game by 18 runs.

Meanwhile, Indian women will be missing one of their top batters in the form of Smriti Mandhana for the first ODI as her quarantine has been extended alongside Meghna Singh as well. Skipper Mithali Raj will be back in action as the leader of the group and she will have to hold the middle order together. Experienced fast bowler Jhulan Goswami is also back for the ODIs and she will be playing a key role in India’s bowling attack.

New Zealand women do not have much to worry about as they have a solid batting lineup and skipper Sophie Devine has been leading the side really well. Lea Tahuhu had a good outing in the T20I and she will have to step up again for her country in the 50 over format this time. They will go into the game as clear favourites and are likely to dominate the series as well.

Pitch Report

India has a spin dominant attack with the likes of Poonam Yadav and Rajeshwari Gaikwad but they are likely to be least effective in this pitch. The fast bowlers had more to extract in the one T20I game and the batters will enjoy the small grounds and the quick field as well. The skipper that wins the toss will be looking to bat first and defending is a lot easier with no dew around.

Probable Top Performers

Probable best batter of this match: Suzie Bates

Suzie Bates has a phenomenal record in ODI cricket with 4605 runs to her name in just 130 ODIs at an average of 41.1. She had a decent outing in the one-off T20I against India recently scoring a brisk 36 off just 34 balls and set the platform for a decent total to be posted. Her experience will be key for the Blackcaps and she will be looking to make the most in these ODIs to get in good rhythm ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Probable best bowler of the Match: Lea Tahuhu

Lea Tahuhu is one of the quickest women’s fast bowlers going around and her pace is always going to be a threat for the opponent batters. She had a brilliant outing in the one-off T20I game where she bagged the man of the match award for playing a handy knock of 27 off just 14 deliveries and continued the good form into bowling as well. She picked up one for 27 in her four-over spell and is likely to be the best bowler in the first ODI as well.

Prediction: New Zealand women are expected to win the match.
