Nick Compton faces heat from fans after he uses 'All lives matter' in his tweet

George Floyd’s death eventually sparked protests all across the globe, especially in the United States. Floyd, an African-American man, died after he was arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis. In the widely circulated video, it was seen that a white police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes, until he succumbed to death.

The police officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter and the incident has led to many violent protests against racial abuse. Condemning Floyd’s death, Twitter was flooded with hashtag ‘BlackLivesMatter’. People expressed their solidarity towards the tragic incident and raised their voice against racial abuse instances across the globe.

Meanwhile, former England Nick Compton had to face some heat from fans after he tweeted a news link talking of the death of South African doctor Roelof Botha with the statement ‘All lives matter’. Botha was killed on his farmland in Tulbagh, Western Cape, on Monday, after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

However, it remains unclear if Botha was killed on the basis of his race. South Africa, from where Compton originally hails from, has a history of racial abuse.

Compton’s usage of ‘All lives matter’ irked many fans as it is seen as dismissive towards the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, which started in the USA in 2013 to protest against the brutality shown towards African-Americans.

Many cricketers came forward to raise their voice against racism

Following the tragic death of Floyd, many cricketers have come forward to speak up against racism. West Indies internationals Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy also tweeted their experiences of racism in cricket. Sammy even suggested to speak up against the pertaining issue and take some action against the injustice.

“ICC and all the other boards are you guys not seeing what’s happening to ppl like me? Are you not gonna speak against the social injustice against my kind. This is not only about America. This happens every day,” Sammy had tweeted.

Many players like Ravi Bopara, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Kagiso Rabada even shared a picture of a black screen to show their support towards ‘Blackout Tuesday’.
