Team India got off to a flying start in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal attacking bowlers from the outset. As this is Rohit’s first assignment as Test kipper, many eyes were on him. He even played some delightful shots early on and may backed him to muster a big score at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

However, he fell prey to Lahiru Kumara after scoring 29 off 28 deliveries. Notably, the 34-year-old got out while playing his very favourite pull shot. It was the penultimate ball of the 10th over and the pacer banged the ball short. Rohit’s eyes lit up as he went for the pull shot to earn maximum runs. However, the connection wasn’t proper as Suranga Lakmal took a fine catch at fine leg.

Pull shot – Rohit Sharma’s major strength, nemesis at times

Now, pull shot has been one of Rohit’s key strengths over the years as short-pitch deliveries don’t trouble him much. However, he has also been dismissed at times while playing this shot. As this was Rohit’s maiden Test as captain and India’s scoring rate was on the higher side, fans weren’t happy with Rohit for giving his wicket away.

In fact, his strike rate was over 100 at the time he was dismissed. While Sri Lankan fielders were delighted with Rohit’s early exit, Indian fans weren’t too happy. After all, the track doesn’t have much help for bowlers and the veteran opener had settled his feet at the crease. Not to forget, Rohit averages over 75 in home Test. Hence, his dismissal was nothing short of a bonus for the visitors.

Meanwhile, this Test also marks Virat Kohli’s 100th appearance in the longest format. Hence, the former Indian skipper, who hasn’t scored a Test ton since November 2019, would like to make his bat talk. Also, the likes of Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer have been given a chance in the game with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane facing the axe.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal:
