Indian cricketing demigod Sachin Tendulkar would rather not like to remember this day in particular as 8 years ago on this very day, the batting maestro was dismissed for a duck for the very first time in his Indian domestic first-class career. Tendulkar who is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen to have ever graced the game was dismissed by a 19-year-old Bhuvneshwar Kumar which brought him into the limelight.

Playing for Uttar Pradesh in the 2008-09 season Bhuvi was a relative newcomer, the right-arm swing bowler realised his dream of dismissing Sachin Tendulkar in the 14th delivery of his spell. He was obviously overjoyed, to say the least, and it was quite evident from how he celebrated the wicket.

Bhuvi later said that it took a long time to sink in that he had actually taken the wicket of none other than the Master himself Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. It was a beautiful inswinger which Sachin had a problem dealing with. It took the inside half of the bat and hit the pads before it ballooned straight in the air and the fielder stationed at the deep short-leg position completed a terrific catch.

The then UP manager Ashish Winston Zaidi had a brief chat with Bhuvi a day before he realised his dream and here’s what he told during that conversation: “Tendulkar jaan thodi ley lega. Jyaada sey jyaada che chakke padenge, aur kya?” (Is Tendulkar going to take your life? In the worst scenario you will get hit for six sixes!)”. Zaidi fired him up and said he was a great prospect for the future and should not waste his talent just to try something different or special.

“Main usko chadaya (I just keyed him up). His strength is with the new ball and he keeps the ball full, lands it on a spot and move it both ways. I just told him not to try anything different or special. Just fix a spot and bowl there,” Zaidi said.

Even if Bhuvneshwar Kumar hadn’t made it to the Indian team, his name would have been etched in golden letters for being the one and the only bowler to dismiss Sachin for a duck in Indian first-class circuit.
