Ever since Babar Azam made his debut for Pakistan in 2015 against Zimbabwe, he has had a great time at the highest level. The Lahore-born batter has been an absolute revelation in the limited-overs cricket, though he is yet to make the same impact in Test cricket. The youngster is currently the top-ranked batsman in T20 cricket even as he is placed third on ICC’s batting rankings.

In Test cricket though, the 24-year-old is ranked 18th. Pakistan may have failed to qualify ahead of the league stages of the 2019 World Cup, but Babar tried his heart out in the mega event. The right-hander scored 474 runs in eight matches at an average of 67.71. After the impressive shows, Babar recently spoke about where he wants to see himself after five years from now onwards.

“What I’ve planned is that I have to give my 100 per cent. And my dream is that I rank amongst the top players, top ranking, and I prove to be better for the team, make my team win because of my performance and make the players also feel happy. So, I want to perform better,” Babar was quoted as saying to ICC in a chat with journalist Zainab Abbas.

Babar Azam shining for Pakistan

Babar was a consistent performer in the World Cup. In the beginning, he was getting the starts but wasn’t able to convert them and it would’ve frustrated him. He is a quality batsman and sets high standards for himself owing to which he is one of the most reliable batsmen in the team. After a number of scores in the double digits, Babar scored a ton against New Zealand at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

He stayed unbeaten until the very end and his knock also ended the Black Caps’ unbeaten streak in the mega event. In Pakistan’s final league contest versus Bangladesh at the Lord’s in London, Babar was set for his second century of the World Cup. Unfortunately, he got out on 96 in a quest to up the ante. Going forward Babar has also the ingredients to become one of the country’s leading all-format batter.
