Former Pakistan captain, Shahid Afridi is currently in the news for many things. He recently revealed his real age, an eternity-long question has finally been answered. Speaking about Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup, Afridi said that it is a team which is capable of beating any side on its day at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, that starts on May 30.

Further on, he maintained that despite the recent 5-0 defeat against Australia in the UAE, Afridi believes that Sarfaraz Ahmed and co. have been doing well ahead and have what it takes to win the ICC’s showpiece event. He added that the series was an opportunity for youngsters after giving rest to their key players.

With the World Cup just a little less than four weeks away, Afridi is happy with the form of the openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq, who he believes they will play a critical role in taking Pakistan all the way to their second World Cup title. Shahid Afridi has represented Pakistan in 398 ODI’s and speaks with experience as he was also a part of Pakistan’s World Cup 1999 brigade.

The Wasim Akram led side had lost the finals to Steve Waugh’s Australia. According to The National, Shahid Afridi was quoted saying, “Personally I felt making so many changes[to the team during the UAE series against Australia] wasn’t a good idea but that decision was made by the selection committee. Anyway, that’s behind us and what’s important is to look ahead,” he added.

Afridi deems the England series as warm-up matches for the World Cup

Before starting their World Cup campaign, Pakistan will play a one-off T20 against England on May 5, followed by a five-match ODI series that starts on May 8. According to veteran cricket Shahid Afridi, the upcoming series is a warm-up for Pakistan ahead of the main ICC event. “We will be playing some warm-up matches in England. And that would be enough to adapt to the English conditions and for the competition,” he said.

Pakistan will play their first World Cup 2019 match at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham on 31st May against the Windies team.
