Personal problems have affected Mohammed Shami bowling prowess: James Hopes

Mohammed Shami has been the spearhead of India’s test bowling. He has been instrumental in India’s success in the past. However, in the ongoing Indian Premier League, the bowler has been struggling to find any rhythm. Shami was picked by Delhi Daredevils for 3 crores during the IPL auction earlier in the year.

The 28-year-old bowler has picked up 3 wickets in the 4 matches that he has featured for the side before he was replaced by Avesh Khan. Notably, the past couple of months hasn’t gone down well with Shami as his wife as accused him of adultery and other numbers of charges that includes fixing and attempt to murder. His wife has lodged a police complaint against the bowler and his family. The situation became murkier when he met with an accident sustaining head injuries.

Following his marriage fallout, the BCCI had cancelled the central contract of the bowler, however, after their match-fixing probe, the bowler regained the central contract as well as cleared him to take part in the IPL.

Delhi’s bowling coach James Hopes suggested that the problems of personal life have affected the performance of Shami. Hopes while speaking ahead of their encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders said that the bowler in the process of sorting out his personal life issues which will take some time.

“I think he has got some personal stuff going on. And it’s tough to concentrate on the job sometimes. Players try to use cricket as a release. Everywhere you have to sort out your off-field stuff before you start performing on the field. He is in the process of doing that and it obviously is going to take some time,” said the former Aussie all-rounder.

The Daredevils’ side in on the bottom of the points table of the IPL. Delhi’s skipper Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as the skipper of the side following the poor performance. It will be interesting if the new captain Shreyas Iyer can bring new aspects in the game of Delhi which helps them win the game
