While the talk of Australia’s wicketkeeping resources has been intensifying of late, Peter Nevill set a record back at home in the ongoing JLT One-Day tournament. The New South Wales’ wicketkeeper affected eight dismissals during their game against the Cricket Australia XI on Sunday. Thus he equalled the record for most dismissals in a List A as a wicketkeeper.

NSW posted a huge total of 332/8 in their 50 overs with contributions coming in from their top order. Nic Maddinson struck a 113-ball 123 while Daniel Hughes and Ryan Gibson chipped in with fifties. The CA XI’s opener Max Bryant struck a quick-fire 89 off just 61 balls and sent tremors in the NSW camp but his dismissal brought an end to the slim hopes of a win for his team. CA XI was bowled out for 239 in 41 overs with Nevill being a part of eight wickets.

Having achieved six catches and two stumpings in the game, Nevill equalled the List A record held by Derek Taylor, Steven Palframan and Jamie Pipe. No Australian wicketkeeper or a wicketkeeper in Australian List A cricket have affected more than six dismissals in a single game before Nevill. Adam Gilchrist executed six dismissals on six different occasions while Ryan Campbell did it three times including once in consecutive matches.

With the recent failures of Australia wicketkeepers especially Matthew Wade, the team combination has been unsettled with Australia already had three different keepers in a space of six games on the ongoing limited-overs tour in India.

This record could put him in the eyes of the selectors and consider him as a regular keeper for all the formats. In the ongoing JLT One-Day tournament, Nevill has already effected 16 dismissals in four games and completed 100 List A dismissals. He now has taken 101 catches and effected nine stumpings in the 66 List A matches he has played so far.
