Player break-up for the Indian Premier League Auctions 2018

The Indian Premier League is one of the most celebrated cricket tournaments across the globe. The event is in its eleventh season and the interest and publicity surrounding the extravaganza has been escalating. The auctions for the upcoming edition will be staged in Bangalore on January 27 and 28 as the world gears up to witness the second biggest auction in the history of the IPL after the inaugural edition.

A total of 578 players have been shortlisted who will now go under the hammer this weekend. The number was initially over 1000 but has been pruned down to nearly half the number. However, a maximum of 182 cricketers can be picked by the franchises. While 360 Indian players have found a place in the list, 218 foreign names will grace their presence in the auctions.

Among the Indians, 298 uncapped and 62 capped players will be auctioned. From the list of foreigners, there are 181 capped and 37 uncapped players. The list also comprises of 36 marquee players which include the likes of Ben Stokes, Glenn Maxwell, Gautam Gambhir, Chris Gayle and several other cricketers who have performed exceedingly well in the erstwhile editions of the Twenty20 league.

The associate world also had something to cheer as a couple of cricketers from Canada and Nepal have also been included. The IPL retention ceremony was conducted in December and 18 players have been retained by the teams. While many teams retained three players, some decided to wait for the auctions to construct their teams.

The retentions

Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have retained one player each and therefore enter the auctions with a purse of 67.5 crores each and also have three Right to Match (RTM) cards in their kitty. Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Daredevils have retained three cricketers each and have a purse of 47 crores.

They also have a couple of RTM cards left in their kitty. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad have gone for two players and will enter the auctions with a purse of 59 crores to go with three RTM cards.
