The Royal Challengers Bangalore retained former skipper Virat Kohli (INR 15 crore), middle-order batter Glenn Maxwell (INR 11 crore) and pacer Mohammed Siraj (INR 7 crore). While the three players were always the favourites, a surprising non-retention was that of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been a vital cog of the team over the last few years.

Chahal will now be available to be picked by the two new franchises, which have time until December 25 to pick a maximum of three non-retained players – not more than two Indian players and not more than one overseas player – before the mega auction, which is likely to be held in last week of December or early January. If not picked by either of the two new teams, Chahal will land in the auction pool.

The leg-spinner has endured a tough year, as his RCB exit is only an addition to a list of recent setbacks. He was not named in India’s T20 World Cup squad, with the Indian selectors preferring mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar over him.

Chahal’s underwent a form slump in the months preceding the T20 World Cup, which was understood to be the reason behind his non-selection, but he also made a quick turnaround during the second leg of the Indian Premier League right before the commencement of the tournament, bagging wickets consistently while nagging the flow of runs.

He could only pick four wickets in seven IPL games of the Indian leg, but was at his wily best in UAE, claiming 14 wickets in eight games to make a strong case for his inclusion. However, all that went in vain as he was not considered despite all teams having a chance to alter the squad until at least a week before the start of the Super12 stage.

Following the World Cup snub, he was named in the Indian squad for the home T20I series against New Zealand but featured only in the third and final fixture at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, which hosts India won to clinch the series 3-0.

In the IPL, Chahal has played all his games for RCB barring one – his debut game for Mumbai Indians in 2011. In 113 games for the Challengers, Chahal has picked 139 wickets at an economy rate of 7.59, but the prolific assocition has come to an end.
