The 2018 edition of the PSL has concluded with Islamabad United lifting the title. Karachi witnessed a high-voltage clash that saw Islamabad United edging the Peshawar Zalmi by three wickets. There have been quite a few youngsters who impressed the selectors with their performance with the most notable one being Shaheen Afridi. On the other hand, there have been some senior players who failed to make a mark in the league and Umar Akmal finds himself on top of this list.

The younger Akmal plays for Lahore Qalandars and was heavily trolled for his poor show. Akmal admitted his shortcomings in the tournament and vowed to come back stronger. He did not play a major hand in any of the innings and failed to make a positive impact on the teams results.

He was also full of praises for the security forces who ensured smooth conduct of the tournament in Pakistan. He also mentioned the overseas players who took part in the latter half of the tournament that took place in Pakistan.

Akmal tweeted “My PSL performance has been way below me and my team’s expectations and I have to improve. But seeing the matches played in Pakistan and the joy of people I’m happy as our cricket is going in right direction. The security forces n PCB management and overseas players deserve a very big round of applause.”

The middle order batsman has gone down the pecking order and needs a couple of good domestic performances to be in national reckoning again. A lot of youngsters are emerging up who are capable of breaking into the national squad. Umar Akmal needs to work on his game to have a chance of playing consistently at the highest level. Tournaments like PSL are a great way to identify players and groom them at an early stage.
