PSL 2019: Peshawar Zalmi’s Darren Sammy arrives in Pakistan for kit launch

The fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to get underway on Thursday, January 14 and the excitement surrounding the T20 tournament is on an escalation. Defending champions Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars, who ended all three editions as the cellar dwellers, would be locking horns in the first match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

In the meantime, the experienced Windies all-round cricketer Darren Sammy has reached Pakistan in order to attend his franchise Peshawar Zalmi’s kit and anthem launch, which will be held at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor House amid much fanfare. A number of eminent personalities would attend the event along with some local bands and musicians.

He has been playing for the Zalmi ever since the inaugural edition and has done exceptionally well. The 35-year-old from St Lucia also enjoys a huge fanbase in Pakistan. Last season, he also came to bat with an injured leg and won Zalmi a match against Quetta Gladiators in Sharjah. In the meantime, Javed Afridi, the team owner, was ecstatic about his arrival in Islamabad and posted a few pictures.

Moreover, he captioned the photos and wrote, “The moment has finally arrived. I am elated to announce that @darensammy88 has landed in Islamabad & is on his to meet all the #ZalmiFans in Peshawar. His excitement can be seen as he steps foot in the city of flowers for the very first time. #PakhairRaghlaySammy,”

The Zalmi are amongst the most successful teams in the tournament. They could qualify to the playoffs in the inaugural edition in 2016. In the next season, they emerged as the champions, beating Quetta Gladiators in the final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. In the previous season, the Darren Sammy-captained team lost to the United in the final.
