Some brilliant individual efforts which earned headlines in the Ranji Trophy yesterday ended up being on the losing side as Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir failed to make miraculous comebacks. The likes of Hyderabad and Bengal registered very crucial victories and have done their chances of qualifying to the next round a world of good.
Hyderabad registered exactly one run more than Himachal’s first innings score and with just one day left, the game seemed like done and dusted for a draw. But Ravi Kiran and Tanay Thyagarajan scalped seven wickets among them to bowl Himachal out for 97 and completely out of the blue, Hyderabad registered a bonus point win.
It was a nail-biting clash in Chennai between Bengal and Tamil Nadu which went all the way down to the final few overs. Chasing 216 runs, Bengal seemed in cruise control at the start of the day (87/2). Rahil Shah’s five-fer almost brought Tamil Nadu back in the game but eventually, Pradipta Pramanik held his nerve and got his side home with one wicket to spare.
Gujarat and Karnataka register big wins
It was a relatively less-dramatic day for Karnataka, who completed their match against Maharashtra without much fuss. Chasing 184 runs, they kick-started their day at 54/0 and ended up winning the game by seven wickets. Devdutt Padikkal and Dega Nischal scored fifties for the side.
Gujarat clinched a massive win against Mumbai, which should boost their hopes of winning the twice in three seasons. Mumbai’s late fight back with the bat in the second innings didn’t continue for long on Day 4 and they posted a 206-run target. Skipper Priyank Panchal went bonkers with a century at a strike-rate over hundred, which helped Gujarat chase the total down in just 41.5 overs.
Defending champions Vidarbha registered an authoritative win against Chhattisgarh and garnered a bonus point as well. They managed to bowl out Chhattisgarh for just 143 runs and were assigned with a target of 45 to win the game. Skipper Faiz Fazal and Akshay Wadkar took their time and completed the game in 19.2 overs.
