With Thursday’s exhilarating action, the 2018-19 edition of the Ranji Trophy saw the end of its ground stages. Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament, which will commence on 15th January.

Bengal teased Punjab right till the end in their Group B encounter and eventually managed to salvage a draw, which was useful for neither. Despite having a huge first innings lead, they failed to contain the Bengal batters in their second innings, who rode on Abhimanyu Easwaran’s double ton and batted the whole day out.

Unfortunately for Punjab, this draw saw them lose a spot in the quarters. If they had won this game, they would’ve ended with 26 points, on level terms with Kerala, Gujarat and Punjab had a superior net run rate.

Vidarbha and Saurashtra romp through despite playing out a draw

It was an intriguing game happening in Rajkot between Saurashtra and Vidarbha, which eventually ended in a draw and both sides ended up getting the desired result. Vidarbha declared at their overnight score and tried to hunt down Saurashtra in their second innings, a plan which backfired badly as Vishvaraj Jadeja scored a century. Saurashtra eventually earned three points thanks to a 76-run first innings lead.

Kerala delivered a sensational knockout punch to Himachal Pradesh and ended up qualifying for the knockouts in a dramatic way. Himachal declared their innings at their overnight score and posted a 295-run target for Kerala. With Sachin Baby, Vinoop Manoharan and Sanju Samson scoring fifties, they managed to chase down an improbable target and finished fourth on the joint Group A & B table.
