The 2021/22 edition of the prestigious Ranji Trophy tournament has turned out to be a really exciting one for the batters so far with Mumbai veteran Ajinkya Rahane and emerging talent Yash Dhull notching up their respective centuries recently. While both the impactful knocks were being celebrated, another talented batter Sakibul Gani grabbed headlines by scoring big on first-class debut. Not only did he breach the three-figure mark but also successfully converted the same into a triple century.

The 22-year-old scored an outstanding triple ton during the Ranji Trophy Plate Group match against Mizoram at the Jadavpur University Campus 2nd Ground in Kolkata on Friday. Even though this is the first 300 of the ongoing domestic tournament, Gani has also achieved a personal milestone with this incredible knock.

Sakibul Gani has become the first-ever player to register a triple ton on first-class debut and it took him 387 deliveries along with 50 boundaries to achieve this feat.

Ranji Trophy: Bihar’s Sakibul Gani scores the first 300 of the season

February 18, 2022, would be remembered as a day when the debutant also ended up creating a new world record for the highest individual score on his maiden appearance in first-class cricket. With this incredible triple hundred, the 22-year-old broke the record of Madhya Pradesh’s Ajay Rohera who amassed an unbeaten 267 on FC debut against Hyderabad in the 2018/19 Ranji Trophy season.

Meanwhile, apart from his individual milestone, Sakibul Gani was also involved in a 500+ run stand for the fourth wicket along with Babul Kumar who also went on to score a double century as this partnership helped Bihar post a first innings total in excess of 600 after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

It remains to be seen how the Mizoram batters would respond after their bowlers were made to toil hard by Bihar’s in-form batting pair over the last one and a half days. Bihar will be keen on winning this game now having scored a huge total in the first innings.
