Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who missed the fifth and final Test at the Oval, had aggravated his injury in the fourth Test in Southampton. He was replaced by the left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who got his first international game on the tour. He did well though and picked a couple of wickets as Team India restricted England to a low score on the first day.

Ashwin sustained a serious injury in the third Test at Trent Bridge when he bowled just one over in the first innings. In the second innings, he bowled almost 23 overs but could pick just one wicket and that too of James Anderson. He was deemed fit to play in the fourth Test but had an ordinary outing, picking just three wickets for 128 runs. His English counterpart Moeen Ali picked nine scalps in the same game to help his side pocket the series.

Clashing opinions over Ashwin’s fitness

Indian captain Virat Kohli said during the toss of the fifth Test on September 7 that Ashwin “aggravated his injury”. The spinner suffered a groin injury at Trent Bridge and was unlikely to play in Southampton but he played after coach Ravi Shastri said that he was good enough to take the field. However, while Kohli said the 31-year-old spinner had his injury aggravated, Shastri and Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane had earlier denied the news in the different press conferences according to the Times Now.

As it turned out, the offie couldn’t give his best in the previous game after which the team crumbled with the bat and eventually lost the series.

Meanwhile, England finished Day 1 at Oval at 198 for 7 after their captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat. Departing opener Alastair Cook scored his first half-century in the series but the hosts lost quick wickets towards the end of the day. Indian pacers Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah took three and two wickets, respectively.
