There were some rife speculations roaming around from the last couple of months that Ravichandran Ashwin could be traded by his IPL team, Kings XI Punjab, during the transfer window. And, the Indian spinner’s move to Delhi Capitals has been finally completed. Now, Ricky Ponting, who is the current coach of Shreyas Iyer and Co., has given his opinion on the presence of Chennai-born spinner in the team.
The lucrative deal between the two franchises has been sealed worth INR 7.6 crore (Ashwin’s auction price in IPL 2018) and an additional undisclosed sum). The 33-year-old was picked by KXIP back in 2018 and went onto lead the Punjab-based franchise for two seasons. But, he remained unsuccessful in making his team qualify for the playoffs. So, this time Kings have brought their association to an end with the spinner.
Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting opines on Ravi Ashwin
Ricky Ponting, the coach of Delhi Capitals feels that Ashwin is a very valuable player. He also added that it will not make a difference for Ashwin to join the new team. He also accepted the fact that the pitch of Delhi’s home ground is on a slower side and it will be helpful for him.
“Ashwin adds a lot of value to any team that he is a part of, and I am sure it is going to be no different when he joins Delhi Capitals. It is no secret that the pitch on our home ground is on the slower side, and is known to assist spinners. I believe, Ashwin, with his clever bowling, will have a tremendous impact when he bowls on it,”, the former Australian skipper said as quoted by India Today.
Ponting also recited that Ashwin is one of the best and experienced players with good records in IPL and for Team India. So, his presence will be helpful for Delhi Capitals.
“He is easily one of the best and most experienced spinners around, with a tremendous record in India and IPL colours. There is no doubt in my mind that Ashwin’s presence will benefit our team tremendously, as we eye the big prize – the IPL title,” he added.
The Indian-off spinner has taken 125 wickets in 139 IPL matches with a best of 4/34.
