The ongoing Sri Lanka tour has started off brightly for the Indian cricket team. The Men in Blue dominated their hosts and outplayed them in every aspect of the game to win by a massive 304 runs. In the process, they took a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
It was Shikhar Dhawan’s breathtaking knock that had laid the groundwork for the victory on the very first day of the Test. While the left-handed opener scored 190 runs off just 168 balls, Cheteshwar Pujara, scored a resolute 153 to take India’s score to 600 in the first innings.
In reply, the Lankans were bowled out for 291, with Ravindra Jadeja as the wrecker-in-chief. The Indians batted again, without enforcing the follow-on. This time, captain Virat Kohli brought up his 17th hundred before declaring the innings on 240/3.
There was never a chance for the Lankan team to chase down 550 in the fourth innings of the match. However, one would have hoped that they would at least try and bat out the one-and-a-half days and draw the match. In reality, though, they were bowled out for a meagre 245, thus handing India a big victory.
It was a good start for newly-appointed India coach Ravi Shastri at Galle. And, not only on the pitch but off it too, Shastri had a good time, as he caught up with some of his old acquaintances. They were none other than, Percy Abeysekera, Gayan Manjula and Nimal, faithful cheerleaders of the Sri Lankan cricket team. Apparently, all three of them are big fans of Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma!
