Ravichandran Ashwin might have been out of the cricketing scene for a while now as he missed the IPL with a sports hernia. However, that didn’t stop India’s ace off-spinner from recounting tales of laughter from his early cricketing days.

By nature, Ashwin is open about himself and his cricketing career and does not shy away from revealing embarrassing stories that involve him. He did exactly that while speaking to host Vikram Sathaye on his show ‘What The Duck’ season 2.

Ashwin recalled how former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth entered the Tamil Nadu dressing room during a domestic game at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2009, sat beside him and asked him what he did on that opening day of the game.

In response, Ashwin shared that he hadn’t had such a great outing thus far, having bagged just the one wicket for his team. Essentially, it was an unsuccessful day for Tamil Nadu up until that point.

Srikkanth’s expectations from Ashwin

Srikkanth then remarked to Ravi Ashwin, “For me to select you in the Indian cricket team, you need to give me five wickets every single game for me to say that you’re good enough to play in the Indian cricket team. It’s not about knowing that you are good enough, you have to show me that you are good enough.”

The obedient man that Ashwin is, he replied with the typical head nod and a prompt “Yes sir.” What Srikkanth did next left Ashwin in a shock and his lunch plans as well!

Krish Srikkanth “picked up a cigar and lit it up, smoked it around, again said ‘Don’t worry things will change’ and then he just dipped it right into the bowl of sambar I was holding and he did not even realise it.”

How about that for absent-mindedness?
