While the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded just over a month ago, preparations for the next season are underway. On Tuesday (November 30), all the eight existing IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players for the 2022 edition. With a mega auction taking place ahead of the competition, each side was allowed to retain a maximum of four players out of which only two can be foreigners.

As most teams are studded with T20 stalwarts, choosing the retained players wouldn’t have been easy. Also, the money spent to retain players has been deducted from the salary purse of INR 90 crore. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have used all of their four retention cards to get a hold of their key players.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) title is still elusive for RCB and they would definitely like to end their drought in the next season. However, they have to deal with some major issues ahead of the season. AB de Villiers, who retired from all forms of cricket recently, won’t feature in RCB colours anymore. Also, Virat Kohli has stepped down as captain. Hence, the side needs to pick a new leader as well.

Virat Kohli is RCB’s first retention

Speaking of the players retained by the franchise, former skipper Virat Kohli was unsurprisingly the first retention made by the team. Although the 33-year-old won’t lead RCB in upcoming seasons, he would continue to be a mainstay of their batting line-up. With him being RCB’s first retention, Kohli will receive a sum of INR 15 crore.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who enjoyed a stellar run with the team in IPL 2021, is RCB’s second retention. Hence, he will receive a sum of INR 11 crore. The dasher would definitely be expected to replicate his heroics in the next season. Mohammed Siraj is the team’s third and final retention. The right-arm pacer has been a vital part of the team ever since joining the franchise in 2018.

While these players will form RCB’s core in the upcoming season, it would be interesting to see who’ll join them. Notably, the side has INR 57 crore in their salary purse to buy players in the mega auction.

RCB’s Retention List for IPL 2022:

Retention 1 – Virat Kohli – INR 15 crore

Retention 2 – Glenn Maxwell – INR 11 crore

Retention 3 – Mohammed Siraj – INR 7 crore

Purse Remaining – INR 57 crore
