Reddit user comes up with an idea of Super Over before the match as Toss

Having a super over in place of the toss sounds like an absurd call. However, once you finish reading this text, the idea might just sound too good. In the recent times, there is one aspect of the game of cricket that has constantly been questioned. While the game is all about the team that plays better on a given day, the pre-match part of the game – the all important toss – has nothing to do with the ability. It is rather only about the luck and the one who wins it, is said to have an upper hand in the match.

The coin-toss did not have a major say in earlier days in the longest format of the game. However, when it comes to the shorter formats, the recent trends suggest that chasing is often the preferred choice after one wins the coin-toss. In fact, even the results tend to suggest the same. The ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League is witnessing a similar trend with captains opting to bowl first after the toss.

Recently, a Reddit user came up with a brilliant idea to nullify this advantage that the winning team gets after the toss. Rather, the idea is to have a better way to determine the winner of the actual-toss instead of the actual coin toss. The user posted his idea in a discussion forum. He noted that a Super Over can be played before the game to determine which team gets to choose who would bat first in the actual match.

He further added that ‘the-toss’ must only be done for the Super Over to determine who bats first in the Super Over. The pitch does not change a great deal in the span of an over and hence it will only be a handy addition to the sport.

“In IPL the teams that bat 2nd win most of the time, this has been proven by statistics. Instead, we should have a super over before the match and whoever wins the super over will decide if they want to bat or field first. A coin-toss will decide who gets to bat in the super over, this will not have a big impact as the pitch doesn’t change much over an over. I feel that a coin-toss gives too much advantage to the one who wins the coin-toss. I feel that teams should earn the toss and it should not be decided by luck,” the user had written.

Earlier, there have been other ideas regarding the same to replace the conventional luck factor. Some experts believe that the visiting team captain must have the option to choose whether they wish to bowl or bat first. Well, the idea could be many.
