The first finalists of the Asia Cup 2018 have been decided. The Indian Cricket Team is waiting to know the result of the virtual semi-final between Bangladesh and Pakistan, to know who they will face off in the final. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have put up commendable all-round performances throughout but lost both their last two games by narrow margins.

As for Sri Lanka, their poor performance in One Day Internationals continued in this tournament too. Hong Kong could manage to generate viewers in only a single match – the one against India in which they put up a tough fight. They played whole 50 overs against the No.1  Asian ODI team and generated interest among cricket audiences.

Bookies thrive in the gulf

Amidst these games, the tournament has come under the scanner for wrong reasons. Reports suggest that a player from the Afghanistan cricket team was approached by an Indian bookie and he immediately reported about the same to the ACSU (Anti Corruption and Security Unit).

It is a well-known fact that Dubai is where most bookies thrive. It’s a hub of betting and match-fixing due to its very rich economy. With the increase of cricket in the region – Pakistan Super League, T10 league and now Afghanistan Premier League, the chances of cricket corruption in the UAE are more.

As per a report on Wah Cricket, an Afghanistan player was contacted by a bookie from India ahead of their match against Pakistan, which they lost. He reported it to his team manager, who had a word with the India staff before reporting it to the anti-corruption officers.

Surprisingly, Sri Lanka’s early exit from the tournament is also being investigated. They lost humiliatingly to Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Group A. The tournament has two ACSU officers, who are monitoring the proceedings in the gulf. The Afghanistan cricket team has been doing a great job ever since becoming full-members. Coming from a war-torn country, they are proving their love for the game with each passing game. Rejection to a bookie only further proves that their love for the game is honest and loyal.
