Mumbai, after a forgettable Ranji season, have made amends in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament. They topped the group C by winning as many as five matches out of six and entered the Super League phase of the competition with full confidence. However, their campaign has been jolted with a severe blow as their captain Ajinkya Rahane has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
According to the reports in the Times of India, Rahane has sustained a thigh injury and the sources claim that the opening batsman and the skipper of the team has informed the selectors of the same. “He has informed the selectors about his unavailability due to injury,” the sources said. Shreyas Iyer, who is in blistering form this season with the bat, will lead the team as Mumbai will take on Karnataka on March 8 in Indore.
The team, though will miss Rahane’s experience despite the fact that he wasn’t in the greatest of forms. He had mustered only 58 runs in six outings this season with the highest being 31.
What about IPL?
Ajinkya Rahane’s injury must have given the early jitters to the Rajasthan Royals franchise and its fans as well. He is the captain of the team and looks set to take over the reins for this season as well despite Steve Smith’s return. The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be getting underway on March 23 and with only just over two weeks to go, Rahane’s early participation in the tournament is in doubt now.
Recently, India’s Test vice-captain had opened up about the limited chances he got in the ODI team and felt that deserved more opportunities before being sidelined. IPL would’ve been the great platform for Rahane and it remains to be seen if he will be able to get fit in time for the competition.
