The 2023 edition of the ODI World Cup will be hosted by India and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started its preparation. As per the latest developments, the cricket body asked the office-bearers to form the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the next year’s tournament, which will take place in October-November. The formation of the LOC is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Moreover, there’s a discussion in BCCI that one of their own should head the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the time of the championship. Apparently, the train of thought refers that the post of the ICC chairman must come to India as the nation is hosting the global competition. It must be noted that India’s Sharad Powar headed ICC during the 2011 World Cup, which also took place in India.
As BCCI is in good terms with current ICC chairman Greg Barclay, the board isn’t likely to take any step to replace the New Zealander. After all, Barclay was pretty helpful to the Indian cricket board during the conduct of the T20 World Cup last year. Meanwhile, this major report was carried out by Cricbuzz. The office-bearers have been authorised to form the LOC,” a BCCI member was quoted as saying.
BCCI in good terms with current ICC chairman
It must be noted that BCCI played a key role in Barclay’s selection as the ICC boss. Hence, the Indian cricket board doesn’t have many reasons to remove him from the position at helm. However, Barclay’s two-year tenure ends this year. Though it’s not sure whether the existing contract expires in December as he was elected in December 2020 or during ICC’s annual conference in July. As per the norms, the existing chairman can seek two more tenures of two-years.
Coming back to BCCI’s Local Organising Committee, acting CEO Hemang Amin and GM Gaurav Saxena are among favourites to get the position of the tournament’s director. As Amin also has IPL to look after, Saxena is likely to take the crucial position.
