Sanjay Bangar has been facing the heat for quite a while now. The former batting coach of the team has been held responsible for failing to resolve India’s middle-order conundrum, which was one of the biggest reasons for the team’s loss in the World Cup semi-final. Another poor decision which led to India’s downfall was the decision to send MS Dhoni at number 7 in the semi-final.
Due to this, he became the only member of the existing coaching staff, who wasn’t given a second stint with the team and was replaced by Vikram Rathour. He was interviewed for almost one and a half hour, where he faced some tough questions from the MSK Prasad led selection committee. On the other hand, head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar retained their respective positions.
Days after the coaching staff interviews, another controversy regarding him has taken the center stage. According to a report from the Times of India, Bangar went into national selector Devgang Gandhi’s room while the selection procedure was in the process. He had a heated debate with him, where he threatened Gandhi against axing him as the national selector and told him the consequences of the same.
”The decision to replace me would fail”
“(When the selection committee was conducting interviews) … He went and knocked on Devang’s door late in the evening and gave him and the selection committee an earful. He warned the selectors that the team would rally around him and the decision (to replace him) would fall flat. It wasn’t required. It wasn’t the team’s job to decide on support staff. It was the selectors’ call,” a source told TOI.
Moreover, Bangar even told him that if they didn’t want to rope him as the batting coach, they should try and give him a place somewhere in the National Cricket Academy. This incident certainly won’t go down well with anyone. It has been said that the board is unhappy with his behavior and it would be interesting to see what action is taken by the BCCI and the concerned authorities against this inappropriate behavior.
