After Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Mohammad Azharuddin, team India’s former captain Sourav Ganguly is reportedly the latest entrant in Bollywood’s biopic list. A biographical movie on Ganguly has been long due, with speculations over it running ever since he assumed the presidency of the BCCI.
While he often denied such reports in the past, this time, the former player has “agreed with the biography”. “Yes, I agreed with the biography. It’s in Hindi, but I can’t say the director’s name right now. It will take a few more days to get everything in place,” he recently confirmed.
As per the limited details, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor leads the race for playing him on-screen, while the movie is expected to be a large banner production with a 200-250 crore budget.
Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor in line to play Ganguly’s role
Previously reports have been suggestive that actor Hrithik Roshan was set to play his role in collaboration with the Dharma Productions, one of India’s leading film production houses. However, neither Ganguly nor Hrithik responded to those reports. Notably, Ganguly has previously been approached by famed Bollywood filmmaker Ekta Kapoor and Fox Star Studios as well. However, the former captain was happy to decline those offers.
As for the current project, which is understood to be in a nascent stage, Ranbir Kapoor’s name has been reportedly confirmed by Ganguly himself, after multiple meetings with an unnamed production house.
Further as per sources, Ganguly’s life as a youngster and becoming an international cricketer, then leading the national team before taking up various administrative roles in the cricket setup of the nation will all be featured in the movie. While the release date of the movie has not been confirmed yet, if everything goes according to the plans, the project might go underway soon, as the script is currently being worked upon.
Ganguly’s has been one of cricket’s most inspiring stories. He took over the mantle of captaincy in the aftermath of the fixing scandal and led a campaign to bring the nation out of the gloom to take the team to historic highs. It is all but certain that whenever the project concludes, it will make one fascinating show.
