Chief selector MSK Prasad has had his share of criticism in office but he might still get an extension if rules are to be followed. BCCI new president Sourav Ganguly has conveyed that the selectors can be appointed for five years. The 44-year-old former India wicketkeeper was appointed as the chief selector in September 2016. He was a member of the panel prior to that as well and now it has to be seen whether the five-year appointment rule is followed.

On Thursday, Prasad was asked about his future at a press conference but he avoided the question. He also met Ganguly on the day for the first time after the latter took over as the BCCI chief. There were also discussions over the future of MS Dhoni, who hasn’t played international cricket for some time.

MSK Prasad backs Rishabh Pant

The selectors told Ganguly in the presence of captain Virat Kohli and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma that they were looking beyond Dhoni now and backed Rishabh Pant although the 22-year-old’s recent form hasn’t been impressive and he failed to make it to the playing XI in the Test series against South Africa. Prasad also said that Dhoni endorses their viewpoint of backing youngsters.

The Prasad-led selection panel has come under criticism a number of times over its light overall experience in international cricket. Prasad himself has played only six Tests and 17 ODIs for India in 1999-2000. He had played with Ganguly but did not get a chance to play under the former captain after he took over in 2000.

FC Cricketers might get a pay hike

As per the report in the Mumbai Mirror, Ganguly’s time could see a pay hike for domestic cricketers – one feature he has stressed on. Currently, a first-class player gets Rs 35,000 a day and it could be increased to Rs 50,000.

The Indian selectors picked the Indian squads for the upcoming T20I and Test series against Bangladesh at home. Kohli was rested for the T20I series in which Rohit Sharma will lead the team. Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube got a call in the T20I squad while Shahbaz Nadeem, who made his Test debut in Ranchi, got dropped.
