Popular sportswear manufacturer Adidas today signed 19-year-old promising youngster Rishabh Pant who made his national debut for India very recently in the final T20I against England. The announcement came at a time when the southpaw was handed over the captaincy of Delhi for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy ahead of more experienced campaigners in the team. Among the current Indian players, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are also being sponsored by Adidas along with youngsters Kuldeep Yadav and Sarfaraz Khan.

Pant came into the reckoning with consistent performance for the junior national team. Making his first-class debut in 2015, Pant made an immediate impact in his debut season including a triple century against Maharashtra and a 48 balls century against eventual semi-finalists Jharkhand. The youngster was delighted with his association with Adidas as he has always dreamt of wearing the products worn by his childhood heroes Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

“I feel extremely delighted to join the Adidas family. I have always aspired to wear their products especially as my childhood heroes Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag used to wear them. So to now have this in common with these legends, feels great. I am at the beginning of my career and am sure that Adidas will help me take my game to the next level and help me create the new,” Pant was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Nikhil Chopra who was among the 3 Delhi selectors who chose Rishabh Pant as the captain for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy said that there was no one apart from Gambhir who would have been made the skipper and they see a potential skipper in Pant so they handed over the reign to the teenager. It will be a big task for Pant to lead some international stars like Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan and Ashish Nehra among others.

“Frankly Vijay Hazare is the last tournament of the season and this was an ideal opportunity for us to see who is the best candidate to lead the state side. We were not finding anyone all these years who could replace Gautam,” Chopra was quoted as saying by the PTI when the announcement was made.
