Rohit Sharma has been a fulcrum of the Indian limited-overs setup over the last few years with tons of runs at the top of the order. The reason that he converts his starts into substantial scores makes him an ominous prospect for the opponents. He is all set to lead the Indian team in the upcoming T20I series against Windies, starting today at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

However, his journey in Test cricket hasn’t been impressive by any means. Albeit he has scored runs at an average of approximately 40 in the red-ball fixtures, most of his runs have come in the sub-continent. In countries like Australia, South Africa, and England, he hasn’t been able to perform owing to which he hasn’t been able to stay put in his position in the national team.

He last played Test cricket when India toured the Rainbow Nation for the three-match series earlier this year. He flattered to deceive in the first couple of matches after which he was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane. Nevertheless, his will have another throw at the dice as he has been picked in the Test squad for the series against Australia, which starts on December 6 at Adelaide Oval.

His game seems to have tightened a lot

In the meantime, Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, believes that the Test call-up has boosted Rohit’s confidence to a significant extent. Moreover, he said that his style of play is suitable for the conditions in Australia where the pitches are expected to have a fair amount of pace and carry.

“Rohit Sharma once again displayed what a power house he is in this format and I have a feeling his call-up to the Test squad for the Australia tour made him more confident,” Ganguly wrote in his exclusive column for The Times of India (TOI).

“His game seems to have tightened a lot and his shot selection has also become better. The Australian wickets are hard, with comparatively lesser movement than England and Rohit’s back foot play will be his strength,” he added.
